Character Info

Name: Stephen Carpenter
Alias: None
Age and birthdate: 30; 08/14/1994
Home city: Mercury City
Type: ADMIN Locator
Occupation: ADMIN Locator

Appearance: Stephen has brown hair and hazel eyes, and wears glasses for both reading and distance (most likely due to a lifetime of staring at a computer screen). At his full height, he's just over 6 feet, but as Stephen is a wheelchair user, he appears a little over 4 feet in his chair. His manual wheelchair is a black Panthera X (or rather it's 2024 equivalent) that he has had modified to best suit his needs. He also has his old manual wheelchair that he keeps in a closet in his house in case of an emergency. PB is Michael Weatherly.

Personality: Most people who meet Stephen would say that he’s a pretty friendly guy. The rest would say he’s kind of annoying. This is due to Stephen’s extroverted nature, which leads him to be a bit nosy from time to time, especially if something piques his interest. He’s the type of guy who likes to know your life story, but at the same time won’t force it from you if you aren’t willing to tell it. But mostly he’s the type of person who just wants to strike up a conversation and get to know you better, and is willing to tone himself down a bit if it makes the other person more comfortable.
He’s also the kind of guy who can get serious when the mood calls for it, and isn’t the type of person to make inappropriate jokes. In fact, he can get quite serious, to the point where it might surprise people who have only seen the friendlier side of him. This is because he’s the type of person who wants things to get done right, and won’t let his personality get in the way. That isn’t to say he won’t attempt to lighten the mood if he feels something has gotten too dark, just that he won’t ruin the mood with poor humor.
While not boastful, Stephen takes great pride in his abilities, and will not hesitate to compliment himself on them should he think he deserve it. He doesn’t find it arrogant to talk well about yourself, so long as you don’t sound like an asshole doing it. This is because he knows how much time and effort and practice he puts into his work (and Stephen is very much the type to try and try and practice and practice), and so he’s aware of the skill that backs up his statements. …Though, to be fair, he’ll probably brag about things from time to time, but that’s usually a joke of some sort.
Finally, though Stephen doesn’t realize it, he’s very much a “save the world” type. He hated watching his brother withdraw and become an entirely different person the way he did, and would very much like to never see it again. It’s why he puts his heart and soul into his work; he wants a world where people with powers aren’t treated poorly by their families, and are able to get the proper experiences and training to not grow up afraid of their own abilities, and he’ll do damn near whatever he can to see that vision through.

Personal history: Stephen lived a normal life on the east coast with his family, with the closest superheroes and villains being in Philadelphia, just far enough away to not be an issue. It was here where Stephen's initial love of computers was born; he literally grew up as the technology did, eventually going to college for computer science with the hopes of landing a well-paying job when he graduated.
His life changed completely when, in 2018, his younger brother Aiden's electrokinetic powers manifested themselves, surrounding him in an electric force field. Stephen, who was home for the summer as he had just completed his masters, discovered Aiden hovering inches from his bed exorcist-style with a wall of electricity surrounding him. Without thinking, he rushed to try and rescue him from the field. The second he touched the barrier he was electrocuted, and that, along with his subsequent sharp drop to the floor, resulted in a complete T-7 spinal cord injury, leaving him a paraplegic.
Over the next two years Stephen underwent intense physical therapy while attempting to hold his deteriorating family together. His father, who had a violent temper to begin with, was determined to get Stephen walking again, even though both Stephen and the doctors knew that wasn't going to happen. With each failure he would take it out on Aiden, blaming him for the accident. His mother tried her best to hold the family together, but both sons could see she was afraid of Aiden as well. Aiden felt an overwhelming sense of guilt over what happened as it was, and continued to withdraw, as fearful of his own powers as his parents were. Stephen did his best to help Aiden, get him into counseling, get him into a program for kids like him, but between Aiden's fear and his father’s intolerance, his efforts went nowhere fast. Finally, when Aiden could take no more, he ran away from home.
Stephen, blaming his parents for Aiden leaving, immediately moved out and hasn't spoken to them since. He devoted all of his free time developing technology to track Aiden, as traditional legwork didn’t seem to get him anywhere. It was this technology that got the attention of ADMIN. They offered him a job in their Mercury City branch as a locator, basically doing what he was already doing for Aiden, but on a much larger scale. Stephen, wanting to prevent tragedies like the one in his family from occurring again, quickly accepted. He moved to Mercury City in the Spring of 2022 and has been loving his job ever since. Unfortunately, he’s no closer to finding his brother.

Powers: None; he is baseline human. However, he possesses the genetic markers of someone with powers, but they aren't active, nor are they expected to activate. It is merely something he could pass on to any children he may have.

Skills: Stephen possesses a strong knowledge of computers, and has a masters in Computer Science. Since Aiden ran away he's come to specialize in creating programs to detect use of powers in superhumans, of which he has created several. Stephen also tries to be up on all of the latest advancements in technology, regardless of whether or not he can afford it.
Finally, he drives using a specially modified car with hand controls.

Weaknesses: Stephen is a baseline human with no powers to have weaknesses. As he is paraplegic, places that aren't wheelchair accessible are a problem for him, as are non-functioning elevators (though in in absolute emergency, he could drag himself down the stairs pulling his wheelchair behind him, but only as a last resort).

RP Goals: To eventually come to assist the superhero community with their coding needs, maybe help put together a formal way for them to communicate. He also wants to make sure that what happened to his brother never happens to another person again, so he plans on working hard at his job and helping as many superhumans and their families as he can.

The greater good is…
Putting the needs of the collective "other people" in front of your own. It varies on the situation: sometimes it's doing something you wouldn't do otherwise, sometimes it's doing the opposite of what you want to do because your way is more selfish. I guess what I'm trying to say here is it boils down to not being such a selfish bastard and thinking about people other than yourself sometimes.

Your greatest strengths are…
I'd hope it's my computer programming skills. I mean, that's my livelihood, after all, and it's how I help the most people. But uh, if you mean in general, I guess it's that once I've started something I just can't let it go until I've seen it through. I'm also known for my delicious ginger glazed mahi mahi, and my chili has been the hit of many a holiday party and potluck.

Killing is…
Not my area of expertise. Wait, is this like a moral question? Well you really shouldn't kill people, since it's illegal. Not only that, I guess it's the easy way out, you know? It's easy to pull a trigger. It's harder not to. It takes a certain amount of strength not to, which is why I guess it's so easy. Did that make any sense?

Teachers and mentor figures would say you are…
Driven, which is really a nice way of saying "workaholic." Not that I don't try to have a social life or anything, but my work is kind of important. I can't just stop at 5 o'clock because I'm off the clock. I'm not trying to sound like an ass or anything, but it is. These kids--and adults--need help sometimes, and if I just stop at 5 things'll never get done. I just do what needs to get done, regardless of what time it is.

Sacrifice is…
Giving a damn about someone else. Really, it goes back to the whole "greater good" thing from before. In order to help the greater good, you gotta first sacrifice something. It's how it works.

When you were younger you…
Wanted to make my own video game. That's why I got into computer science in the first place; I was going to be a video game designer. Then I realized that there was so much more coding had to offer than just making the next Call of Duty. Maybe one day, when I'm not saving the world (ha ha) I'll try my hand at video game designing. Who knows.
